Day two of hatching - Part 1 |
|
When we checked the cameras this morning at 5.30am it was evident
that one more chick had emerged from its shell, but the question
was - when?
Chick Number 2
A hunt through
the recordings showed Mum asleep at 3.51am, and then seconds later
she checked
below and pulled out a half shell to eat:
She didn't eat all of it, and discarded it at the side
of the nest, and in turn moved it to another position with her
tail when she swung round in the nest cup:
It stayed at the side until 5.20am when she ate it for an early
morning breakfast:
Six minutes later and she left for the first time this morning
and confirmed that six eggs remained, and two chicks were present:
A little later the second half of the shell from chick number
two magically appeared, and then disappeared:
Mum
discovers
the shell at 3.52am and later eats
the second half.
Attempts were
made to feed both of the youngsters early this morning, but it
didn't look like either could quite get the hang of it:
Two
for breakfast are served here. (The funny noises in the background
are the resident Pheasant also having his breakfast at the feeders).
So far this
morning many a feed has been made, and the attentive male continues
to impress.
One such example happened at 10.14am when he again managed to
feed a chick. Only one mind you, and it was probably number 1
from yesterday.
His fun was spoilt when Mum returned, but what was really interesting
was that he wanted her to give him the food!
Normally it would be the other way round, and he passes it to
her to feed a chick:
Man
food arrives here.
So we continue to wait ... and another update will be posted
later at around 3.00pm.
