A Cracking Day - The Eggs Start to Hatch - part 2 |
|
On a rainy afternoon the story continues to unfold in the box,
and both parents are being very attentive towards both the chick
and the eggs.
Yes, at 7.45pm when this
entry was uploaded there is still only one.
The male has played his part
superbly, and he deserves to be congratulated. Many feeds have
been brought in, and whilst the chick doesn't always get offered
food, Mum spends a lot of time still checking and turning the eggs.
From time to time she will
momentarily move out of the nest cup and look downwards, just to
see if another has yet emerged:
The Female Feeds
Feeding has been interesting, and to be honest she hasn't been that
successful in getting the young one to take anything.
Probably not surprising, it will still be a little 'shell' shocked
from its experience today.
The video below shows the male bringing food, and the female trying
to get rid of it, but again it's a bonus meal for her:
Are
you interested in food yet?
The Male Feeds
Something we were unaware
of before, and have always wondered about was put to the test at
4.11pm when the camera caught sight of the male feeding the newborn
chick.
We really didn't think that
they accepted food at such a young age (just 3 hours old!), but
you have to give the male credit, he has shown us all a few things
this year:
The
perfect father.
So by 7.45pm only
one chick has hatched, and one parent and one chick settled down
after lights
out:
The
lights go out here.
A great day, and as we said
in the previous entry, a little earlier than planned - let's
hope number 1 makes it through to fledging OK.
Seven more to go ... but
when?
