A quiet day and missed food opportunities |
|
Another morning gone, and another no-show in the
egg department ... this is possibly beginning to get a little
strange.
Around the garden we have
a number of other boxes with Great Tits and Blue Tits nesting
and all have eggs and most are now incubating, so the camera box
is at a very different stage to most of the other wildlife in the
area.
Looking back through the
diaries from 2005 and 2006 the nest this year looks to be more
than ready to move onto the next stage, but she obviously still
isn't quite ready and more finishing touches have been made today.
The male raised his head
at 5.16am, thought about life a little and moved towards his partner.
Not a good move, as she got a little snappy again and within 60
seconds of waking he was out in the darkness of the garden, complete
with a feather which was stuck to his beak:
Another 30 minutes of sleep and she stirred once more, moved out
of the nest cup, moved back into it and then hauled herself out
again with the aid of her wings.
She spent a minute bouncing round the side of the nest, stopping
off for a look out of the window and then it was out into the garden:
Not quite the behaviour of a girl who might have laid an egg !
The
male awakens, looks a little hen pecked and leaves for work here.
We mentioned that the box was getting quieter yesterday, and
today it looked like the female only made 3 entries which were
also deliveries between leaving first thing at 5.52am and ????pm.
(This might be slightly inaccurate as a technical hitch this end
meant we didn't get any recordings between 7.00am and 8.00am).
It was however the male who made the most visits as he kept coming
back nearly every hour, just to have a look at an empty house:
Only
one of his visits brought food, and it looked as if she missed
out on a lovely juicy wriggling Caterpillar at 10.41am.
The
male arrives and calls for her, and gets no response here.
After a break of nearly 6 hours the female appeared inside the
box again at 5.43pm, and half an hour later the male was dangling
food through the hole, but probably ended up eating it himself:
So a really quiet day, and maybe this signals that she is
now a lot happier with her nest and feels that it might be right
to start a family for this year.
As ever we await to review the video footage for tomorrow to
see what it may bring ...
