Day 56

13th March 2007
Just how many birds visit? ... and someone gets upset

Part 1 of a 2 part Diary entry today:

A cloudy start to the day which turned into sunshine and a slight wind at times with a cooler high than yesterday of 12.9°C.

The box has seen fewer visits today and a lull in activity from time to time.

The first visitor at 7.03am was a bird the camera doesn't often see, and it is a lot slimmer than some of the birds which call into view. The question was, was it a male or a female?

Within 10 minutes though, a more regular visitor was back:

And another 10 minutes later and his lady was back, first pecking the outside, and then the inside:

Between them another 11 visits to the entrance passed and then she decided that is was worth popping inside, if only to try and rip up the floor again, as she did yesterday:

An hour later and a different male arrived, and tried to entice his mate inside:

However, the mate that responded to his calls wasn't the one from earlier:

She didn't enter, and it was only a brief affair, but by now it was getting a bit confusing as to how many birds were taking interest. Is there the possibility that three males have called by in 2.5 hours?

For the next 3.5 hours the cameras fell silent until this bird arrived at lunchtime:

It spent about 4 minutes in and around the area and then disappeared, only to be replaced by this one a minute later:

After a lot of careful looking in and around the hole, it finally plucked up the courage to go inside ...

... although it did hang onto the hole for a few seconds before it dropped to the floor:

It just looked as if this bird hadn't been inside before, as it carefully looked around and took in the box:

If this was its first visit, then it wasn't a very happy one.

Just 21 seconds after it had entered, another bird arrived at the hole, and the occupant wasn't happy. It immediately opened and raised its beak towards the on comer, spreading its wings at the same time:

So who was at the door? Well it looked like the bird which had called at 1.03pm:

It looked like he got quite a shock as he put his head through, only to be shouted at:

He flew off again quickly, but the bird inside really wasn't happy about the intrusion, and continued to show its dislike about what had happened:

Oh dear, the intruder was back and it got the message:

Once left by itself, it showed that it still wasn't in a good mood and displayed 3 times for no apparent reason (or was it a reflection in the glass?):

It settled down and then took time to walk around the floor and check the glass:

By this point we had assumed it was another male, but then it did something which made us think otherwise.

It went over to the far corner of the box and displayed the briefest of shuffles:

Given this it must be a female then, but it was still troubled by earlier events, and again displayed aggressive behaviour for no apparent reason:

The really confusing bit was that when it heard some loud calls nearby, it lowered itself to the floor and acted as if it was a male:

Mmm ... really not sure what was going on here at all ... maybe it was just one very mixed up female?

The unhappy bird can be seen here.

For the next few hours it was only this bird which visited, but never entered:

And half-way through the afternoon it decided to bring a piece of Peanut to the box! Why it should do this is a mystery, did it think a female was inside?

... today is getting very muddled indeed!

To top it off, there was a very late visitor at 5.44pm, and yes you guessed it, it was of course another bird, although one that had already been seen today:

Quite a day then and a difficult one to try and work out exactly what is going on in the garden at present.

There were 88 visits and 5 entries, and when they weren't looking for temporary homes, they were out on the feeders:

In part two of the diary today, we reveal that there was another surprise in store ...
