Tell a Friend about Nest Watch
Day 3

19th January 2007
A bobbing head, and a tight fit

The weather today has been a lot better than the gales most of the UK suffered yesterday. At times we have been reminded that above the clouds a blue sky exists, and with a high of 12.7°C it was quite pleasant at times.

The box received two visits today. The first was at 10.07am and lasted about 10 seconds. A head bobbed back and forth, and it could have looked as if it had one eye firmly fixed in the direction of the glass wall:

The second, and slightly longer visit was 35 minutes later.

This time the interested bird looked as if it was really struggling and desperately wanted to get in. It was either a little on the large side, or maybe it just couldn't quite muster up the energy?

It gave a few wiggles, but it didn't look like it was going to be successful.

If a human had been doing this, it would have looked as if their shoulders were just too wide to allow an entry:

Interestingly enough, this sort of thing also happened at the beginning of 2006. For a while it looked as if one bird was just a little on the plump side, and a 25mm diameter hole was not quite big enough for it. We did make the hole the right size, we promise!

Maybe Blue Tits are just getting a bit bigger these days, or more than likely, they have been stocking up too much over the months on the feeders.

Anyway, we're off for a long weekend, and will be back in a few days. There should be another report on Wednesday.

We'll leave the WebCam running, although only the infra red light will be on, and hopefully there won't be any more power cuts like yesterday, so it should keep active.
